Public transport in Ghana runs on buses that can take a beating and keep earning. Whether you are putting a vehicle on the Accra to Kumasi road, moving staff to a mine or factory, or running a school route, the mid-size bus in the 15 to 33 seat range is often the sweet spot. It is big enough to make money on each trip and small enough to handle town roads, fuel costs, and tight loading bays.
This guide walks through the Korean bus options that reach Ghana in good numbers, how the seating tiers match different jobs, and the practical questions around diesel engines, parts, and import duty.
Matching seat count to the job
15 to 18 seaters
Compact minibuses, close to the classic trotro size but newer and safer. They suit shorter town and feeder routes, hotel and church shuttles, and small staff runs. Lower fuel burn and easy parking are the big wins. On long intercity trips the per-seat economics are weaker.
25 to 30 seaters
This is the workhorse band for Ghana. Large enough for busy town routes and medium intercity legs, while still being nimble in traffic. A common choice for staff transport and for school buses that need real capacity.
30 to 33 seaters and up to coach
At the top of this range you move toward larger passenger buses and, above 33 seats, into full coaches. These carry the most passengers per trip and give the best per-seat cost on long, steady intercity routes. The trade-off is a bigger vehicle to fuel, maintain, and manoeuvre.
Korean bus models that suit Ghana
Hyundai County
The go-to mid-size minibus. A single-decker that comes in roughly 15, 25, and around 34 seat layouts, so one model line can cover most of this range. It runs proven Hyundai diesel engines and is simple to service. For staff buses, school routes, and shorter intercity work, the County is hard to beat on reliability and parts availability.
Hyundai Universe
Hyundai's heavy-duty coach. It seats roughly 40 to 50 passengers depending on layout and is built for long-distance comfort. If your route is long intercity or premium tourist and staff transport, the Universe sits at the top end just above the 33 seat band.
Kia Granbird
Kia's high-deck coach and a close sibling to the Universe. It typically seats around 40 to 50 passengers and uses a large diesel engine. Like the Universe, it is aimed at intercity and tourist work rather than town routes.
Daewoo buses
Daewoo built city and intercity buses that many Ghanaian operators know. Worth considering where you already have Daewoo experience in your fleet or workshop, since familiar parts and mechanics reduce downtime.
Why diesel and durability matter here
Every bus above is diesel, and that is deliberate. Diesel engines give the torque needed to pull a full load up hills and out of stops, they are economical on long runs, and they last when serviced on time. Durability is not only the engine. Look at the chassis, suspension, and body condition, because Ghana's roads are hard on all three.
Duty, age rules, and how buses are assessed
Treat the figures below as general guidance and confirm the exact position with the Ghana Revenue Authority and through ICUMS before you commit.
- Duty rate. Commercial passenger buses often attract a lower import duty than luxury saloon cars, but the rate depends on how the specific vehicle is classified in ICUMS.
- Valuation. Duty is calculated on the CIF value as assessed in ICUMS, not simply on what you paid. The ICUMS used-vehicle duty calculator lets you enter the VIN, make, model, and year to get an estimate before shipping.
- Age and overage. Ghana applies overage penalties on vehicles beyond a certain age, added as a percentage on top of normal duty. Verify the current penalty for your vehicle's year with GRA.
- The 2026 age limit. From 1 October 2026, the framework reportedly restricts importation of used vehicles more than 15 years old and requires inspection in the country of origin with a Certificate of Conformity before shipment.
